Experts to discuss fraud and corruption risks in infrastructure projects across Central Europe
Industry experts from several Central European countries will discuss fraud and corruption risks in infrastructure projects during an upcoming international webinar.
The webinar, titled “Fraud and Corruption Risks in Infrastructure Projects: Lessons from Central Europe”, will take place online on 9 April 2026 at 10:00 CET and will cover the lessons regarding fraud and corruption risks across the Baltic countries, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Large infrastructure projects involve complex procurement processes, multiple stakeholders and significant financial flows. While highly visible corruption cases occasionally attract public attention, experts emphasise that many risks arise in more subtle ways during everyday project practices.
The webinar will explore these issues through practical examples from the region. Topics will include:
- how combinations of procurement requirements can unintentionally limit competition,
- how technical specifications may be adjusted before tenders under time or funding pressure,
- how contract structures during project delivery may create incentives for problematic practices such as inflated reporting of engineering or supervision hours.
The webinar will feature Nigel Iyer, an international specialist in fraud and corruption risk management, who will share insights from his global experience in identifying and preventing fraud in large projects. Ondřej Vaněček, contract manager and FIDIC engineer working extensively in the Czech and Slovak infrastructure sector will present practical examples illustrating how such risks appear in real procurement and project delivery situations.
Through discussion moderated by Zanda Zariņa, co-founder of CONSTRUCTIVE the webinar will explore not only obvious corruption cases but also systemic industry practices that may unintentionally create risks even in otherwise well-intentioned projects.
The organisers emphasise that the goal of the webinar is to promote open professional discussion and exchange of experience across Central European construction markets, helping project stakeholders better recognise risks and strengthen transparency in infrastructure development.
Registration for the webinar is free of charge and available HERE!
The event is organised by CONSTRUCTIVE – a Latvian-based platform for sharing experiences among construction industry professionals – in cooperation with B4 – software that helps organisations discover fraud and financial damage along with inefficiencies in their financial workflows, the Slovak Association of Consulting Engineers (SACE) and the Czech Association of Consulting Engineers (CACE).
